Ghost sighed and listened to the forest. He tried to find Braveheart, maybe she could heal them.

Braveheart padded around a tree. She sniffed the air again, no prey scents came to her.
Ashpaw opened her eyes. She looked at Ghost and struggled to her paws. Tears came to her eyes when she thought of what she had to do. She shook her head and limped toward Rosefierce's den. Every step she took was agony but she gritted her teeth. The pain she was going through was better than being stuck with Umbra in that horrible place. Even being thrown out of the clan was better. Ashpaw finally reached Rosefierce's den. She paused to catch her breath and then padded in. Rosefierce was asleep in her nest, curled around Milkkit. Ashpaw wondered how many lives she had left. Will I have to kill her nine times? Ashpaw lowered her ears and pushed away those thoughts. She limped toward her mother. Gently she picked up Milkkit and laid him well away from Rosefierce. Ashpaw turned back to Rosefierce. Rosefierce was lying on her side. Ashpaw rolled her mother over until she lay on her back. Ashpaw crouched down by Rosefierce's neck. Ashpaw swallowed. She opened her mouth and placed her teeth over Rosefierce's neck. She hesitated and then bit down as hard as she could.
Rosefierce's eyes flew open and she began to struggle. She tried to scream but couldn't. She rolled to her paws and tried to shake Ashpaw off. Ashpaw kept her mouth closed over Rosefierce's neck. Blood drenched her muzzle. Her eyes were shut, but tears escaped to mix with her mother's blood. Rosefierce was weakening. Her struggles became weak twitches until she lay still. Even then, Ashpaw kept a tight hold on her mother's neck. A few moments passed and Rosefierce was back. She started to struggle again but Ashpaw kept her hold. Soon Rosefierce was still again. Ashpaw kept her hold. A large pool of blood was beginning to form, drenching her paws and belly fur. Rosefierce began struggling again and soon she was still. The pattern went on until every life was drained from Rosefierce. Even after Rosefierce had lost her ninth life, Ashpaw kept her teeth in her mother's neck. In was a long time before she could bring herself to open her jaws and let go.
Ashpaw stepped back away from her mother's body and spat the blood out of her mouth. Ashpaw stared at Rosefierce's lifeless body. What have I done?
"You've done well." Umbra stepped over Rosefierce's body. "Don't feel bad, she was weak. Your clan is better off without her."
Ashpaw shook her head.
Umbra smiled. "I understand. You need time to get over this." And then he was gone.
Ashpaw stood up. She turned and limped out of the den. She left bloody footprints behind her in the dirt. She made it to the middle of camp and then collapsed, sobbing.

Braveheart crouched low. She saw a mouse sitting on the roots of an oak. She crept forward as quietly as she could. She paused and then leaped into the air. She caught the mouse in her claws and nipped its neck. She picked up the prey and went back to the place she had buried her other catches.
